And so began my wine weekend winding through the Andes Mountains to Mendoza- but, this post is more about the driving adventure than the wine. The idea to spend a weekend in Mendoza first popped up when we were three weeks into living in Morocco. At first, I thought flying from Buenos Aires would have been easier. Turns out Mendoza is a lot closer to Santiago than Buenos Aires — only a 5-hour drive with epic landscapes as you go over the Andes mountain pass. That sealed the deal. Reality was a bit different. Luckily our Costa Rican friend, Rodrigo, volunteered to drive and swiftly maneuvered up the 28 switchbacks to the crest the Andes side of the mountains. I was in awe of the engineering that went into creating the roads and tunnels over, under and through the mountains. Evidence of landslides dotted the landscape and, in several places, tunnels were built where a road once was. Some of those tunnels were completely covered by the remains of a more recent landslide. Emigration out of Chile was a breeze. We actually thought we missed something and got out to double check. Getting into Argentina, on the other hand, wow — what inefficiencies. We spent about an hour going Zynga Poker Shootout Rules immigration: getting our passports stamped, car searched at customs then driving 30 min down the road to the final checkpoint…. Two stamps? Turned out the piece of paper they handed us upon entering the border zone, needed to have four stamps. We u-turned around and back up to the border. The area was lovely but shockingly quiet. As we walked to the main square for lunch, we were surprised by how few people and cars were out and about. Majority of the restaurants were closed as well. As we quickly realized, the city shuts down for the weekend, especially on Sundays. We learned on Sunday during our wine tour that the wineries are open Monday-Friday as that is when the work takes place. On Sunday, we started at Familia Zuccardi, one of the largest wineries in Mendoza. The tour was great and I finally understand why some wines have a twist top verse a cork. We sat on in the back of an old pick-up truck as we wove through the vineyard. Gorgeous views. Lunch was farm to table small plates and of course we were able to continue tasting their wines. Our next stop was a smaller, family operated winery. Experiencing one of each was perfect. We had the owners flittering in and our of our tasting as they attended to other tastings where people spoke different languages. Familia Zuccardi had a high level of professionalism, making sure the lawns were manicured and we were greeted with champagne. This smaller one, was more casual and we were welcomed inside their kitchen for the tasting.
